Mayflower Club’s Update

Despite the recent arctic weather both the Monday and Wednesday afternoon Mayflower Clubs have enjoyed a wonderful time.

On the 7th February we held a surprise 60th Birthday Party for our very own Carol Berridge. Carol looks after both clubs and all of the work and friendliness she puts into the Clubs is much appreciated by all our members. So much so that members wanted to put on a surprise special birthday party for her. At the same time we also celebrated Pat Collins’ 70th Birthday. Carol was subjected to a Mastermind World Challenge of getting the most questions right in two minutes. I am not saying that the questions were rigged but believe it or not, she astoundingly got 25 questions all right within the allotted time and was awarded the “world record” certificate. Then both Carol and Pat had to face a “This is YOUR Life” session where some embarrassing episodes in their lives were revealed through secret birthday presents. Both were presented with a bouquet of flowers and after a spread of nibbles and sandwiches they jointly blew out the candles on a joint birthday cake. Happy birthday to you both from all of us.

The 14th February was a particularly lively session as we celebrated Valentine’s Day, Pancake Day and even the Chinese New Year of the Dog. A bit of a mish mash as it included shooting Cupid’s arrows at the Chinese Monster Dragon followed by a Pancake tossing competition. Our fortunes for the coming year were also revealed through Chinese Fortune Cookies kindly provided by the Markfield Inn Chinese Take Away.

The Cupid’s Arrow shooting competition was “expertly” won by Mary (Robin Hood) Smart with Alan coming a close second. Christine Willett, enthusiastically cheered on by her Grandson Jack, stormed through the pancake tossing championship with a count of over 80 pancake tosses in the allotted time. I must admit that many of our members were not so expert and, to shrieks of laughter and cheering, there were bits of pancake and debris flying all over the place. We all finally relaxed with a couple of pancakes each and a cuppa.

Wednesday the 28th February was terrible day weather wise with ice, snow and bitterly cold arctic winds battering the village. We did not expect anyone to turn up for the session BUT we were wrong as many of our members battled through the “Beast from the East”. They came out in cars, mobility scooter and walking frames to enjoy our St.David’s Day celebration. We started off with an entertaining picture quiz on famous Welsh people which was won by the Welsh Wizard Team. This was followed by a warming bowl of Welsh style Leak and Potato soup that we had fortunately prepared earlier just in case.
